Android Virus or malware using push message

Technology Send feedback »

Recently I received what a message on my phone labelled as a push message from phone number +447500254276 inviting me to visit a website called www.iclick4.com and a title saucy mobile menu.

I was suspicious of the message as I am very careful of what I download. I cancelled the message and tried to visit the website using my normal desktop pc. The moment I hit the above website a download window opened. Again usually the sign of malware.

What I find upsetting is that the only applications I have downloaded from the market are RoboDefense (a paid for game) and amazon kindle. I checked my phone usage on my t-mobile online and it does not appear to have got any additional costs on my account suggesting that this is an attempt to infect my android phone as opposed to my phone already been infected.

The domain name iclick4.com

is registered to the suspicious looking

The ip address of the domain is pointing somewhere in netherlands and is registered to a web hosting company called host1plus.

I attach a screen shot in case it helps anyone.

HTC hero 2.1 update fails (warning triangle)

Technology Send feedback »

I have the t-mobile version of the htc hero (for some reason called t-mobile g2). For some reason the first part of the 2.1 update failed when I applied it (I was getting a warning triangle and the only way to restart the phone was to take battery out and back in).

I found a way to fix this.

Go to to the htc website and download the t-mobile rom for it

http://87.106.248.77/download/RomCode//HTC%20Hero/RUU_Hero_T-Mobile_UK_2.73.110.26_R_release_signed_NoDriver.exe

Even though it says its the same version I applied it.

Like magic the first part of the update worked fine and I got the youtube update.

As soon as I restarted it I got a message saying that the 2.1 update is available. I applied it without problems.

As always use at your own risk.

Parking at St Albans train station using RingGo

Complaint, Politics & economy Send feedback »

This morning I went to park to St Albans train station to park for a trip to London. For one more time our train service has been the most disappointing experience.

Here are my reasons

  1. It is hugely expensive as for a days parking £6.20 per day
  2. The pay with credit card facilities were again not working
  3. As a result of the above, I was forced to use the RingGo service to pay for parking(basically you call a number and you give them your license plate and your cc details to pay for parking)

What did I think of the RingGo service?
In a nutshell I fell frustrated and ripped off. For the following reasons

  1. Their voice recognition system did not understand me and I had to repeat instructions and information whilst my train was gently leaving the station and I was missing my meeting
  2. The RingGo service is incredibly expensive. It costs an extra 50p plus 1.2% charge, plus (if I understood correctly) a number of text messages (so far 3) charged at 10p a message - which they called convenience messages!!! I don't even know how to stop these messages. A days parking therefore has cost me over £7 using this service

Next time drive to London. Its cheaper and less frustrating. Until at least our government decides to do something and stop rail and parking companies reaping commuting public off.

University of Birmingham request transcript online

Complaint Send feedback »

I made recently the mistake of trying to request an academic transcript from Birmingham University on-line. The website was at best not easily usable, in my view, and looked like it was put together by a 11 year old.

Having survived the poor on-line experience, I paid £5 via paypal for the transcript and waited patiently for several weeks. Nothing arrived.

I then emailed University of Birmingham. No reply.

I then raised a dispute via paypal asking 1) where was the transcript and 2) why did no-one responded to my email and 3) why did it take a paypal dispute for someone to respond. The University of Birmingham only responded to point 1 and that was by sending me two conflicting emails.

I emailed again and again via the paypal control panel & by standard email and I never got an answer to 2) and 3) and in the end I never got the transcript either. At some point they just refunded me without an explanation.

How Very disappointing.

I suppose there are plenty of universities out there to chose from.

Why doesn't ipad have flash?

Technology Send feedback »

I visited today the PC world in Hemel Hempstead to check out the newly arrived ipad. Not sure what the fuss was about with the queues in the shop in London as there was plenty of stock in PC world Hemel Hempstead and not a lot of interest when I was there.

What was interesting was that when the PC world sales person was asked by one customer why ipad does not support flash he responded:

Apple does not want to pay for flash license because HTML 5 will take over from December :-D

I wonder if this was genuinely not having a clue about flash and apple or he was simply trying to mislead the customer so that he spends his hard earned money on something that most likely will be of little use (at least as far as I am concerned).
